Celebrity Obsessed

Pardon me while I rant. I have watched the news over the last week and have been in outright awe as the tragic demise of Heath Ledger has been repeatedly discussed. Are we really at a point in our society where a celebrities potential overdose/suicide leads to a discussion about lives cut short? I asked Michele, why should we mourn? What I meant was that while it is obviously tragic to lose anyone so young, does Ledger’s celebrity make him any more deserving of our grief? Personally, I think that celebrity should be used for good. I will certainly feel the loss of a Bono or Oprah who has used their celebrity to change the world.

I am not sure how that really applies to the Ledger situation, but I am continually amazed at how a persons singing voice, athletic or acting ability automatically qualifies them as great people. I find that this is rarely the case.

Note: When I was typing this, I noticed that my spell checker identified Bono as misspelled, but Oprah as correct. Makes me wonder who wrote that dictionary.
